Nice to start the 2009 season on a fine dry evening. Last years Champions Barton Grange
got the season under way with a win at home against Chipping, but the three teams; Preston
Grasshoppers, Grimsargh and Fulwood & Broughton that finished just below them all lost.
Chipping batting first got away to a slow start but a stand of 54 between Jonathan Kenyon
and Tim Proctor enabled them to reach 87 at the end of their 15 overs. Barton Grange make a good start then lost a couple of wickets then Mick Richardson scored 26 Rt and the winning runs came in the 12 over.
Whittingham were visitors to Fulwood and reached the highest score of the evening 127,
with Tahir Khokhar 27 and Asif Khalid 25 both retiring. The home side made a solid start with Kevin Wilkinson 25 Rt then Paul Geldard 25 Rt, but got behind the required run rate and were 35 runs short at the end of the their overs. It was noted that the 2 wickets that Kevin Sutcliffe took for Fulwood were the first he had taken since last June.
Preston Grasshoppers were bowled out for 58 at Longridge with Liam Platt and Ashley Bolton
both taking 4 wickets, Longridge made a poor start but Tony Charnley scored 24 not out to give
the home side a win against last years runners-up.
Ribchester had a 19 run win at Grimsargh, with Chris Boyle top scoring in their total of 110,
in reply the home side reached 91 with Andy Riddick retiring on 25.
In the local derby at Guy’s, Owd Nells lost by 12 runs, G Smith top scored with 27 Rt for Guy’s, and
R Charles 25 for Owd Nells.

On a dark damp evening they did well to get four games played in the Boddingtons Village
Cricket League. After three weeks there is only one team, Whittingham that has won all 3 games.
Batting first at Longridge they scored 116, Mubarak Mirawala 25 and Zaheer Ahmed 27 both retiring, then bowled the home side out 75, with Dave Young top scoring with 23, and Mubarak following his batting took 3 for 9 with the ball.
There was a first win of the year for Owd Nells, passing Ribchester total for 103 in the last over.
Fulwood had a good win against Barton Grange, with three of their batsmen scoring 25 or more.
Guy’s beat Hoppers at Lightfoot Green scoring 81, James Hesketh 28 Rt and Craig McIntyre taking 4 for 9. Then Hoppers batting fell apart with Adam Whalley taking a Hat-trick in his 3 for 7, and were 13 runs short when they ran out of overs.

Fulwood with 3 balls to spare in a 15 over game on a dull evening at home, main run scorers for
the visitors were Kerry Watkinson and Tony Hughes and in reply Mike Whalley 29 and Robbie Charles
28 had a good stand before they both retired then Carl Reynolds 26* saw them past their winning target.
Grimsargh reached the highest total of the night 136 against Barton Grange who were restricted to 104.
Longridge recorded their 3rd win of the season in beating Chipping by 27 runs.
Preston Grasshoppers’s 128 was to many for Ribchester to chase and failed by 21 runs.

Another wet evening for the 5th games in the Boddingtons Village Cricket League, only two were played.
Whittingham continued their good start to the season with in a win at Lightfoot Green, beating Preston Grasshoppers by 10 runs. Batting first they reached 96-8 from their 20 overs, highest score
was extras 29, with three batsmen getting into double figures, for Hoppers Glenn Steel took 4 for 15.
In reply Hoppers also had three batsmen reaching double figures with Marc Balshaw and Gareth Dyer
both scoring 20, but steady bowling by Whittingham kept the batsmen in check, and they were bowled out for
86 in the 19th over, Zaheer Ahmed taking 3 for 13.
At Grimsargh the home side won off the last ball against Fulwood in a 15 over game. Top scoring batsmen were Mark Routledge 25 Rt, and Pete Nelson 28 Rt for Fulwood, then Steve Bell 29 Rt for Grimsargh with Matt Banks

some very interesting games in the next few weeks when these teams meet each other.
Whittingham got back into winning ways when they won against Owd Nells, but play Preston Grasshoppers

recorded their first win of the season beating Owd Nells at home.

a high scoring game at Fulwood, visitors Grimsargh reached 167 with 5 batsmen
retiring, in reply Fulwood
made a brisk start with 50 coming within the first 6 overs, but then the
scoring rate slowed and they ran out of
overs when 21 run short.

Grange bowled Longridge out for 84 then it took them to the 19th over
to passed that total.

The Boddingtons Village Cricket League season started this week on very nice evening, with last years Champions Preston Grasshoppers entertaining the runners-up from 2007. Batting first Fulwood & Broughton scored 98 –6 in their 15 overs, with Adam Cooper top scoring with 25 Rt, the pick of the Hoppers bowling attack were, C Berry 2 for 13 and C McIntyre 2 for 9. In reply Hoppers had a steady start, but then lost several wickets, but with M Lough holding end up they got nearer their target, but going into last over they still required 17, then Mick Lough had to retire with 30, and was replaced by Mark Rigbye with 3 balls remaining from which he scored 10 runs to win the game for Hoppers, for Fulwood Adam Cooper took 3 for 16.
Barton Grange visited Guy’s Thatched Hamlet and scored 115, with Peter Topping again leading the way retiring with 25, supported by B Stuart 25 Rt and M Laking 27 Rt. They then bowled Guy’s out for 67, with Mick Walker 30 Rt scoring nearly half the runs, the early damage was done by Ian Topping taking 3 for17.
At Whittingham the home side got away to a winning start by beating Chipping by 4 wickets with an over to spare. The visitors innings was built around J Mainwareing 25 Rt, in reply Mohammed Munavvar give his side quick start with 25 Rt, then Zaheer Ahmed finished the game off with 22 not out.
In the other two games Longridge beat Owd Nells at home, and Ribchester won, playing their game at Grimsargh.

In the second week of the Boddingtons Village Cricket League season there were second wins for Barton Grange and Preston Grasshoppers.
Preston Grasshoppers had a convincing win at Owd Nells, Hoppers made a good start with Cameron Berry retiring on 25 supported by Ricky Sands, at the end of their overs they had reached 102, they then bowled the home side out for 54 with Craig Steel 3 for 14 and J Peterson 3 for 4, doing the damage.
Barton Grange beat Longridge by 6 wkts with 2 overs to spare. Longridge’s openers gave them a good start Steve Proctor made 25 Rt and D Young 22 but the were restricted to 79 after their 15 overs, then in reply Peter Topping again retired on 25 with the main support coming from Mike O’Malley 22 not out.
Fulwood won their first home game of the season bowling visitors Ribchester out for 96 with I B Hussain top scoring with 28 Rt, Adam Cooper and Gavin Clinch taking three wickets each. In reply Fulwood lost three wickets before Pete Geldard 25 Rt, and Adam Cooper 24 not out saw them pass their target, winning the final over.

The Ribchester score was built around C Boyle‘s 25 and M Jones’s 26 both retired.

It the local derby at Lightfoot Green, Barton Grange passed their winning target of 109 with one ball to spare. Preston Grasshoppers got away to a good start with Wayne Steele and Mark Rigby both retiring on reaching 25, but then after a mid innings collapse they reached 108 at the end of their overs. In reply Peter Topping gave the home side a good start retiring on 28 then lower down the order 26 from Mike Halewood put them on their way, but it was down too batsmen 9 and 10 to score the winning runs.

The joint leaders of the Boddingtons Village Cricket League both won this week, but third placed Fulwood lost and with Whittingham winning at home against Grimsargh they join Fulwood in third place, and play each other next week.
After the heavy rain just before the start of the games on Wednesday evening, it slowed the outfields out and it meant that the bowlers were handicapped with a wet ball, so two games were reduced to 15 overs per side. One at Whittingham where Grimsargh scored 96, which the home side passed in the thirteen over, the other at Guy’s where the home side also won in the thirteen over against Chipping who reached 106 with Phil Deakin’s 25 top score. In the Boddingtons Village Cricket League this week the top two teams increased their lead at the head of the table, with Barton Grange having a convincing win against Chipping and Preston Grasshoppers having a lucky win at Whittingham.
At Lightfoot Green, Barton Grange bowled Chipping out for 70 with Phil Deakin 21 top scoring, and Mike Halewood 4 for 13 and S Perruzza 3 for 4 doing the damage. So with last games played in The Boddingtons Village Cricket League for 2008, Barton Grange finish as Champions, with Preston Grasshoppers the 2007 winners, runners-up, and Grimsargh with a late run in, third, Fulwood & Broughton fourth and Whittingham & Goosnargh drop down to fifth.

Barton Grange ably led by Peter Topping have been at the head of the table, often level with Hoppers for the last 10 weeks, and it is the first time they have won the League since they joined in 1996, often finishing about fourth or fifth.
